About 6061 Aluminum
6061 is the most widely used heat-treatable aluminum alloy. Alloyed mainly with magnesium and silicon, it offers a strong balance of strength, corrosion resistance, weldability and machinability at a reasonable cost. That is why it is the default choice for so many machined and fabricated parts.
Typical Properties (6061-T6)
- Ultimate tensile strength: about 45,000 psi (310 MPa)
- Yield strength: about 40,000 psi (276 MPa)
- Elongation: about 12%
- Density: 0.098 lb/in³ (2.70 g/cm³), about one third the weight of steel
- Main alloying elements: magnesium 0.8–1.2%, silicon 0.40–0.8%
Typical values for reference only. Guaranteed minimums depend on product form, size and specification.
Choosing a Temper: T6 vs. T651 vs. T6511
- T6: solution heat treated and artificially aged. Full strength, but not stress relieved.
- T651: T6 plus stretching to relieve residual stress. The standard choice for plate that will be heavily machined.
- T6511: the extrusion equivalent of T651, stress relieved by stretching with minor straightening allowed. Common for extruded bar.
Common Specifications
- ASTM B221: extruded bar, rod and shapes
- ASTM B211: cold-finished bar and rod
- ASTM B209: sheet and plate
- AMS-QQ-A-200/8: extruded bar and shapes
- AMS-QQ-A-250/11: sheet and plate

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you deliver 6061 aluminum to Austin?
Yes. We ship from our Dallas warehouse to customers throughout Austin and Central Texas. Ask about lead times for your location when you request a quote.
Which 6061 temper should I order for CNC machining?
For plate, choose T651. For extruded bar, T6511 is the usual choice. Both are stress relieved, so parts move less as you remove material. Plain T6 works well for sheet and light machining.
Can you cut material to size?
Yes. We saw cut bar and plate to your lengths and sizes. Include dimensions and quantities in your quote request.
Do you provide certifications?
Material certifications and mill test reports are available on request. Let us know your requirements when you order.
Is 6061 the right alloy for my part?
6061 is a great all-around choice. If you need higher strength, look at 2024 or 7075 aluminum. If you need stainless, see 304 or 17-4PH. Our team can help you compare.
What should I include in a quote request?
Alloy and temper (for example 6061-T6511), form (bar, plate or sheet), dimensions, quantity, any required specification or certification, and your delivery city.
